A Cool Mind and Some Scruples

“The more I examine myself, dear friend, the more I think that I was not made to live in revolutionary times. If it had only been a matter of working for society, I would perhaps have been able to render service, but I could not march behind a party standard, no matter which one. Parties are always composed of passionate, credulous people who act out of conviction, and of rogues who follow them out of self-interest. Having a cool mind and some scruples, I don’t conform to one type or the other.” Tocqueville, from a letter to Ernest de Chabrol, October 18, 1831
